Tamkang meets the sub-indicators of 11.4.1 to 11.4.9 by pursuing the sustainable development of the human settlement environment. The university was awarded the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Community Safety in 2008 and 2012 respectively on Community Safety Promotion for "International Safety School" certification and recertification, becoming the first college in the world to pass the certification. Since then, the university has taken "People-oriented, systemized, and campus sustainable," as the core spirit of campus environmental management. The development of a blueprint for campus advancement plans are made based on the short, medium, and long term, and created a human-oriented, friendly, safe, and sustainable campus environment. The campus is located on a hillside and is not suitable for cycling, thus, the university prioritizes to develop public transportation instead of private transportation, and there are fewer parking spaces on campus with more pedestrians and vehicle lanes divided. The district scope provides a more comfortable environment for faculty and staff to walk around on campus.
The concept of sustainable development is gradually introduced through the renewal of the hardware buildings of the faculty and student dormitories and the transformation of living behavior patterns. For instance, the original large-scale vehicle of the university is responsible for the connection between campuses and MRT stations. The use of aged vehicles with diesel oil that produces air pollution was eliminated and the coordinated bus industry replaced the connection with medium-sized low-chassis buses. The service frequency was increased to 100 times than the original during the morning, afternoon, and evening; The establishment of the U-bike shared single station greatly improves the convenience of the Tamsui campus to and from the MRT station and the light rail station, and also increases the willingness of faculty, staff, students, and even disabled friends to use public transportation. The wellness campus with free entry and exit of personnel makes the campus the best relay point for residents of neighboring communities to and from the Tamsui MRT station, expanding the accessibility of public transportation services for surrounding residents.
