Tamkang University have dedicated outreach educational activities for the wider community as following,
◆Since 2007, the Office of Continuing Education has been offering various life courses for senior citizens, including “Literary Youth Life,” “Language Learning,” and “Arts and Humanities.” These diverse courses are designed to provide seniors, alumni, and local community members with opportunities to enhance their enjoyment of life through learning while contributing to community engagement and promoting sustainable development education.
◆The Department of Educational Technology annually offers one course under the “Service Learning Professional Knowledge” program, where professional instructors lead students to engage with nonprofit organizations. Students are tasked with applying their expertise in educational technology and theories of adult learning to help plan and design services that meet the learning needs of adults.
◆The General Education and Core Curriculum Center organizes the "Sketching Tour of Century-Old Historic Churches" event, guiding students and the public through a local journey to better understand local heritage sites and architectural history.
古蹟教堂走讀速寫 探索北臺灣百年歷史◆The General Education and Core Curriculum Center held two performances titled "TKU & NTU Collaborative Creative Music and Dance × Houtong Miners’ Life Adventure Exhibition and Performance." These exhibitions were open to the public, with one of them held in collaboration with the Houtong Miners’ History Museum at the Houtong Coal Mine Ecological Park in Ruifang District. Students performed in the core mining areas, with local mining veterans and the public attending and enjoying the performance.
猴硐煤礦文化藝起來 走讀礦業歷史◆The “Assemblage” course offered by the Department of Architecture collaborated with the USR project “Good Life in Tamsui,” leading students during the summer to engage in a local community environment construction project, which received high praise. The project moved to Yilan this summer, where they partnered with Yue-Ming Elementary and High Schools in Suao Township. Using a “Big Hand Holding Little Hand” approach, they carried out environmental education actions through “Friendly Campus Fieldwork.” A presentation showcasing the results of this collaboration was held on July 15, 2023.
淡江建築系攜手中小學 共同構築友善校園◆The Digital Humanities Research Team from the Department of Information and Library Science held a presentation on June 2, 2023, to showcase the results of their USR project and key research achievements titled “Flying Over the Keelung-Tamsui Twin Cities in the Metaverse.” The event invited faculty, students from our university, and Tamsui cultural and historical workers to participate. The presentation featured a combination of metaverse technology and historical scenes, allowing participants to travel back in time to the Age of Exploration and experience the historical cities of Keelung and Tamsui in northern Taiwan. Attendees could also sit in an XR360 immersive chair, simulating the feeling of flying over the twin cities as if on a light aircraft.
◆The Department of Russian, under the theme “Agriculture and Reginal Revitalization,” invited Mr. Che-Yue Chang, the head of Asungo Farm, to explain and help students understand the unique small-scale farming in the Tamsui area. This included exploring market opportunities for agriculture and agricultural commercialization. The course laid the foundation for students to understand the relationship between product commercialization, rural management, leisure tourism, water and soil resource protection, ecological balance, and sustainability concepts in agriculture. Additionally, the course featured alumni who started their own businesses, sharing their entrepreneurial experiences and success tips. This gave students an introductory understanding of entrepreneurship and the process of product commercialization. By creating a Russian language corpus focused on agricultural revitalization and entrepreneurship, the course helps students develop industry-related language and proficiency and enables them to contribute their knowledge back to society.
◆The Department of Economics organized a one-day university life event for homeschooling students from Taipei’s middle and elementary schools, allowing them to experience a course on sustainable economics. The activities included farming in Shimen Township, beach cleanup, water observation, and a tea-making experience.
◆The Department of Accounting offers a course “Consultation Service for Filing Income Taxes,” where students apply their tax knowledge by assisting Tamsui residents with their tax filing at the Tamsui Office of the National Taxation Bureau of the Northern Area, Ministry of Finance.
◆The Department of Accounting offers a “Social Service” course in collaboration with Penghu Xixi Elementary School, Xinyuan Educational Foundation, and WT Educational Foundation to carry out the “Penghu Xinyuan Classroom” project. As part of the project, students regularly engage in weekly video reading sessions with underprivileged elementary school students in remote areas.
